raport CW Jimmiego SV1BTR z ARRL EME

Thank you to all who were active on 2m-70cm-23cm cw last weekend. It has been a joy to work you and sorry to those I missed. Finished 1st leg with 6 on 2m, 25 on 70cm, 59 on 23cm. Down from last years. Mode, cw random. 2 comments from my side:

a. moon conditions were pretty bad, with deep long qsb minimums due to libration (vy poor choice of contest weekend, again as high declination only, is a narrow minded and ignorant factor) , affecting 2m the most. Also higher bands, but as normal with shorter qsb duration but distortion especially on 23cm. Pls apogee, so high path loss. A deadly combo. 70cm polarity was most of the time close to 45 degrees.

b. Never before I have seen so low activity on 2m cw in ARRL EME Contest, since 1994 that i participate. This is only because contest is mixed and everyone works digital being so easy with deep search, loggers, qso’s under the noise floor etc. I read a reflector mail where 306 stations were logged on 2m digi mode, whereas in cw random not more than 22 qrv in total have shown up, from discussions with other friends. The only State side station heard/wkd has been N4GJV. In an American EME Contest! For example in last yrs I had been working (100 on average each year 2003-2007, 60 in 2009, 41 in 2010, 45 in 2011, 29 in 2012 due to lost elevation in 1st leg), in cw random. Now, only 6 in 1st leg and i doubt what 2nd leg brings. In September’s ARI EME Contest cw I wkd 20 stations in 3 hrs qrv. This shows that a cw only, contest, brings entirely different results. Since 2001 cw eme community has been saying is all wrong and will harm cw to have a competition where the 2 modes co-exist. Of course we were systematically ignored by the person who lobbies ARRL and has the contest become mixed, so as to promote his mode. Due to this very unfortunate development of ARRL EME Contest being mixed (the only reason) with the devastating effect it has on 2m cw activity, I am seriously thinking to not participate from 2014 onwards. This downturn, well predicted in yrs but purposely left unattended, is frustrating to say the least.

For this year of course, as a prelude, I will be active in 2nd leg on the 3 bands.

kolejna ciekawostka

On Saturday I worked on 23cm 0000-0330 and 0630-0930 VK3UM, OE5JFL, DJ8FR, F5SE/P, G4CCH, OK1CS, LZ2US, SD3F, SM4IVE, JA8IAD, DL3EBJ, SP6ITF, YO2BCT, JA4BLC, IZ1BPN, SP7DCS, RA3AUB, SP6JLW, RD3BA, DL0SHF, CT1DMK, I1NDP, SV1BTR, EA3UM, UA3PTW, DL6SH, RN3A, PA3FXB, DJ3FI, OK1CA, K5GW, IW2FZR, IK5VLS, K1DS, DF3RU, WD5AGO, IK3COJ, SV3AAF, NA4N, WA6PY, W6YX, K1JT, DL1YMK, N2UO, 9A5AA. Total 46. Heard working other stations, UA4AAV, UA4HTS, HB9BCD, WA2FGK, W5LUA, VE4MA, N4PZ, VA7MM. (12 NA stations in a total of 54.)
Hint to smaller stations... when youve just worked a big, loud station look carefully +/- 1 KHz for medium size stations calling you, net your echo on them and reply, an SDR will help in this.
On 70cm Saturday,1000-1100 I worked SM6FHZ, VE6TA, SM2CEW, SP6JLW. I heard F5JWF very briefly, then nothing. 70cm conditions seemed awful, very broad polarisation peak with Faraday about 45 degrees, maybe the high solar activity was the cause. I did in the end get on for 3 hours on Sunday although the dish was waving about alarmingly in the wind and thus I could only use 70cm. Conditions were much better and I worked PI9CAM, K1JT, N4GJV, UA3PTW, OH2PO, DL9KR, SP7DCS, SV1BTR, OZ4MM, W8TXT, HB9Q, DF3RU, G4RGK, and I2FHW for a total of 18 on 70cm. Hrd WA6PY and chased F6HLC around without sucess.
Thats it for this year’s ARRL, I’m unable to operate in the second leg. Thanks to all for the great CW QSOs, I’m available for CW skeds 70-6cm any time wx permitting.

Ciekawa informacja o I turze zawodow ARRL EME...

Many thanks to all of the 2m & 70 cm cw EME enthusiasts, who were active, last weekend!
On Saturday, I was QRV only on 2m, due to problems with my 70 cm system.
On 2m, I logged contacts with OZ1HNE, SP7DCS, DL8UCC, OK1MS, LZ2US, and SV1BTR. SM2CKR was called (QRZ? reply). OK1VVP was also heard, but I had no opportunity to call him.
I had recently suffered a cascade type failure, that affected my transmit side, on 70 cm. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, and I underestimated the amount of time that would be required to effect repairs. Thus I was not QRV, on 70, until Sunday. The repair efforts included the removal of a wasp nest, and many dozens of their builders, from my LNA / T/R relay enclosure! Fortunately, they were lethargic, thanks to recent cool temperatures, and I was able to remove the wasps and their nest, without receiving a single sting. My LNA was badly corroded by the excretions of the wasps, and the performance of the LNA was suspect. However, there was no opportunity to do anything about that issue, if I planned to be QRV, on Sunday morning.
I overslept, on Sunday, then initially found little activity, and only a very few weak signals, which caused me suspect that the LNA was defunct. Fortunately, however, the signal levels and the activity level soon improved considerably! The activity level was surprisingly good, for several hours, until ~ moon loss time, in Europe. Meanwhile, I was able to enjoy QSOs with SM2CEW, K1JT, SP6JLW, G3LTF, OH2PO, DL9KR, PI9CAM, DL7APV, I2FHW *, SV1BTR, WA6PY (many thanks for hanging in there, Paul!), HB9Q, DF3RU, and K0RZ. Gotaways include SP7DCS, SM6FHZ, F6HLC (all called), OZ4MM, UA3PTW, and W8TXT. The band seemed full of signals, and I undoubtedly missed identifying many of the active stations, that were QRV!
I keenly hope that they will be active again, in November!
Again, many, many thanks to all, for the very enjoyable random cw EME QSOs, and for taking the effort to dig out my QRP signals!
I hope for good condx, and plenty of activity, during the November fun session!

Raport Jimmiego, warto dokładnie przeczytać ...

Thanks to all for another ARRL EME Contest! Pleasure to work you & apologies to those I missed. I stopped 4 hrs before the end on Sunday as I was too tired and troubled from low cw activity especially on 2m, because of the contest being mixed. It was hard for the 2 previous sleepless nights calling cq, especially on 2m & 70cm with no takers. Friday when competition started I lost my headphones and audio amp, so was operating through loudspeaker with intense blower noise in my ears..hi..next day modified rx audio setup not to optimum but workable and managed to hear ok again. Conditions were not good, high libration again, which caused vy deep long qsb on 2m especially, as well as 70cm, and distorted signals on 23cm. As in Oct, my echoes and most EU signals on 432 were at 45 degrees. My 2m rx is 4-5db down in last 2+ yrs, will do system maintenance in the summer and get back to normal. It is not wise to choose weekends of high libration, but seems that organizers only know how to look at declination. It is certainly important but libration must be taken seriously into account.

Below is a summary of my results, all but 1 QSOs in cw random (1 sked on 70cm last leg). I post a last ten years’ table for comparative purposes (all QSOs in cw random, no loggers) as CT1DMK makes statistics so proactively sending it. I am qrv in this contest since 1994.

2013 2m: 24 70cm: 34 23cm: 75 13cm: 40 6cm: 9 (in ARI which is cw only contest, wkd 20 on 2m in 3 hrs..)

2012 2m: 29 70cm: 36 23cm: 73 13cm: 39 6cm: 19

2011 2m: 45 70cm: 52 23cm: 79 13cm: 37 6cm: 14

2010 2m: 41 70cm: 30 23cm: 88 13cm: 40

2009 2m: 60 70cm: 48 23cm: 57 13cm: 43

2008 not active

2007 2m: 100 70cm: 52

2006 2m: 81 70cm: 28

2005 2m: 97 70cm: 49

2004 2m: 95 70cm: 33

2003 2m: 72

For 2013 we have 35 stations appearing on 2m cw, and 360 on jt mode. I was told by a friend mixed 4 long yagi station & operator that he worked 170 QSOs with use of internet logger in jt mode and managed only 3 in cw random..Activity level shows the degree of QSO ease between the 2 modes, so quite obvious what stations choose on the lower bands in a mixed competition, and why. I respect freedom of will as i do understand that one can reach where he can.

In this mixed contest reality especially on 2m&70cm, it looks pointless to me to be qrv again as long as rules do not change for competition to entirely separate by mode. Pity, this to be requested since 2002 but being purposely ignored.

Thank you once more & 73

Jimmy SV1BTR

...kolejny raport i komentarz do zawodów....

"VK3UM 2013 ARRL Contest / results comments.
The times / declination for the Southern Hemisphere was typical of the many years past where we only get one shot at Europe on one weekend or the other, but that’s the way it has always been! This year I actually had 17 minutes at the beginning of the contest and worked 10 during that period on 23 cm. It could have been more if you guys were not so accurate at zero beating each other! Conditions on 70 cm were about 45 degrees off on rise and set for both weekends but signals with slow fade were excellent except there were very few. My result on 70 cm was the worst ever. Twelve 70 cm QSO’s total tells the sad story of the activity. Combining the CW and Digital modes to encourage activity has in my opinion, had the opposite effect and is/will be the death knell of the ‘Contest’ from my perspective. I support the two weekends as explained above, as we have less window opportunities than the Northern Hemisphere and add to that the inevitable inclement weather either side of the equator, as it has been in the past, some of us are lucky to get a window at all!

It seems to me to (the Contest) has reached the point of having only a WSJT version, pick the contacts you want from MAP 65, coordinate on Internet, forget all licensing power restrictions, forget your neighbours EMR hazards and enjoy your selves .. so be it .. go that way for the majority and forget what Ham Radio was all about. The proof to me lies totally in the activity now coming from the USA noting that it is an ARRL Contest where the operators have shown their preference for the mode and bands of choice. After decades of participation, (taking part and entering logs year after year), this year has been a turning point for me. Listening to my echo’s on 70 and 23 cms for hours during a NA widow with 2 or 3 US Stations on air is most disappointing. Those that say they will be working both modes, be honest, you don’t, so don’t infer you will when you can’t. ...kolejny raport..........

Hi all,
just like in 1st leg I was focused on 70cm.
The second part brought me 4 more contacts
(LZ1DX -22dB, NC1I -17dB, SM2A -27dB, WA4NJP -20dB)
I overslept first window in the early morning
on Satruday so I missed DL9KR, VK3UM, sri guys..
Total result for ARRL EME Contest 2013:

13xJT65 contacts + 2x contacts in CW

The highlight was CW sked with Jimmy, SV1BTR
(sked so I didn't count it for contest ;-). After
several skeds during last 2 years this time
we finally made it (mni tnx for patience!).
Jimmy is my 87th mixed initial (27th CW initial)
worked with my single 23el dk7zb 5,7m long yagi
and some 600W at dipole (all in enormous city
noise).

Except noted contacts I also decoded in JT65
I5CTE -25dB and SM5DIC -26dB however thank to
bad SWR (icing) I wasn't able to be active
on 70cm during Sunday evening.. Special note
is relating to K4EME, saw/heard Cowles with
nice signal almost during whole window, congrats!

Other bands: I spent some time to look on 2m
around 050 and heard SV1BTR + OZ1HNE, however
signals were so weak (M copy) so I didn't call..
In JT65 during Sunday evening I gave fast point to
3Z4EME, UR7D #412, RU1AA, PI9CM #413, 7K3LGC,
I2FAK and K1JT. On 23cm I did some tests with
my 1m dish for fun however without success.

PS: I support splitting contest for one weak for CW
and second for MGM only (for 2m/70cm bands)..

Hi Moon Friends

First I want to thank everybody that worked me in the contest and also if you did call me also. I will tell you all about my problems before the contest. In the first leg of the contest my amplifier went bang. This was close to the end of the Europe window. With little sleep I took my time to find and fix the problem. That took about 1 1/2 hours. The rest of the weekend was OK except conditions I thought were not great. Then the week of the second leg on the contest my elevation system went out for the first time. Then on Thursday 14th my gear box went out and took out one of the worm gears. I worked on it till two hours before the contest started to get it back up and running. I few days before the contest I had got a noise source from somewhere that is S-9 to 20 over from 65 degrees to 135 degrees. It would come and go but was there a lot till I got up about 35 degrees in elevation. My good friend Les, W2DBL came on my computer and we set up Linrad to help with the noise problem. So I ran Linrad with MAP65 the second leg of the contest. I still need to find my noise problem. Saturday night we had high winds that I was running in. About 3:30 AM my elevation went from 65 degrees to 120 degrees. I have a safety wire with a BIG spring on the elevation to stop it at 75 degrees. Well the gush of winds were much stronger than I thought so the array flipped over. I went outside in the wind and rain and got it back over. Then I used a rope and ran it through four of the vertical mass pipe to tie the ends to the 45-G tower mounted on the two truck chassis. Then I could control the array from flipping over. I went out about every 20 minutes to adjust the rope. To do EME I think you have to be a little crazy also . I had a great time in the contest even with the problems. Maybe next year things will be better . All contacts were random using Linrad with MAP65 and also WSJT9 on two other computers. All contacts were digital mode.

228 contact with 23 dupes. A lot of dupes this year. So score is 205 contacts with 83 multiplier. I worked 35 states out of 50 this year. I did miss 4X1DG, 9A2PT, CT1FJC, LA8KV that were on the first leg of the contest. Looking forward of seeing everybody next year. Thank You.

Dear moon-friends,

The PI9CM DX-Group team (Chris PA2CHR, Jurgen PE1LWT, Johan PA3FPQ)
participated the 2013 ARRL EME contest for 2 weekends. Multi-op, all
band, all mode.

We were active on 3 bands: 144MHz, 432MHz and 1296MHz.

Our results:

144MHz: 180 qso's (all digital)
432MHz: 6 qso's (all digital) Our amplifier died the first
weekend so not qrv in 2n leg
1296MHz: 27 qso's ( 16 digital and 11 cw)

With Linrad + MAP65 we managed to operate FULLY RANDOM, NOT ASSISTED!

I think the activity was good, conditions quite well. There could be
more activity from our USA friends.

Thanks all for the FB contacts and till next year (or earlier from a
unknown/new DXCC :-) )

Equipment:
144MHz: 4 x 14 elem. DK7ZB h + H pol.
432MHz: 4 x 33 elem. M2 H pol only.
1296MHz: 3mtr dish, 110W. 0,3dB NF.

On behalf of the PI9CM DX-group,

raport zespolu pracujacego pod znakiem K1JT........

Hi all,

Once again we thoroughly enjoyed operating in the 2013 ARRL EME Contest
as a Multi-Op, All Mode, All Band entry. We used the K1JT home station
on 144 MHz and the K2UYH station on 432 MHz through 10G. We made 16
fewer QSOs than last year, but with 8 more multipliers produced a nearly
identical score.

We have been making this effort together since 2007, and it's
interesting to compare results over the years. Here are our summary
tallies from 2007 to 2013:

Band 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013
---------------------------------------------------------------
144 175/67 185/65 161/65 228/79 176/69 182/68 194/75
432 29/22 45/31 50/31 38/28 40/29 59/29 43/28
1296 84/35 94/37 73/41 83/40 77/40 82/37 74/38
2.3G 18/15 24/20 29/24 31/22 22/18 24/20 22/22
3.4G 7/7 4/4 3/2 4/4 8/8
5.7G 11/9 4/3
10.3G 8/7 1/1
---------------------------------------------------------------
Total 306/139 356/160 320/168 384/173 318/158 362/167 346/175

Score: 4.3M 5.7M 5.4M 6.6M 5.0M 6.0M 6.0M

During the October 2013 contest weekend we connected to the HB9Q 1296
EME Logger at K2UYH in order to help Al to find and work a new DXCC,
H44HP, using his home call. This outside-the-contest activity had no
effect on our contest effort under the callsign K1JT; however, to avoid
any possible suggestion of impropriety with respect to contest rule 6.3,
we will be submitting our 2013 log as a non-competing, just-for-fun
checklog.

Sometimes after a contest we hear comments in the nature of "Activity
was pretty good, but where were all the stations from XXX, or YYY?" So
for interest as one example, I did the exercise of counting our 144 MHz
contest QSOs by country (or DXCC entity) of origin. Here are the results:

39 United States
19 Russia
17 Germany
9 Italy, Ukraine
8 France
6 Netherlands, Sweden
5 Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Japan, Slovenia
4 Australia, Latvia
3 Finland, Poland, Spain, New Zealand
2 Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Romania, Serbia
1 Argentina, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Crete, Estonia,
Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Kazakhstan, Martinique, Mexico,
Norway, Scotland, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea,
Switzerland, Uruguay, Wales

The distribution of QSOs seems pretty much as might be expected.

I'm surprised that some operators still seem to think that a "side
channel" of some sort is necessary or desirable for making QSOs in a
contest like this one. Back in 2006, I had a very modest 2-yagi station
on 2 meters and made 93 contest QSOs with no loggers, no clusters, no
internet, no telephone, no skeds. This was before work on MAP65 had
started, so I didn't use that aid, either. I should emphasize that
polarization diversity is very important on 144 and 432 MHz. And today,
MAP65 (or its equivalent) can be a very big help in making JT65 contest
QSOs on 144, 432, or 1296 MHz.

Another fallacy: some operators of small-to-modest stations believe
there is little point in calling CQ during an EME contest. Nothing
could be farther from the truth! If you call CQ for 10 minutes or so
during a busy contest weekend, other stations will find and call you.

This year our hard-working operator team included K2BMI, K2TXB, NE2U,
and W9IP in addition to K1JT and K2UYH. We also had the usual help and
encouragement from K1DS, K2QM, and K3TUF, outside of actual contest
operating periods.

Thanks for all the QSOs, and see you next year!
